The pope, who was originally from neighboring Poland, knows several languages and often recites a few words in the local tongue when he travels. 22.06.2001 (16:45) // Religious Information Service of Ukraine Source: The Associated Press, June 19    Stanislaw Shyrokoradiuk, archbishop of the Kyiv and Zhytomyr Roman Catholic diocese, said almost everything was ready for the visit, except decorations at Kyiv's Chaika airfield, where the pontiff will pray Sunday and Monday. Shyrokoradiuk complained of excessive police and security measures for the visit. "Ukraine's security measures pass all bounds and sometimes recall an emergency situation," he was quoted by the Interfax news agency. Shyrokoradiuk cited a recent incident when police stopped a bus with Belarusian pilgrims and banned them from emerging for several hours while they conducted checks.    John Paul's June 23-27 visit to the predominantly Orthodox former Soviet republic has sparked much controversy. The visit is strongly opposed by the Russian Orthodox Church, which has jurisdiction over the majority of Ukraine's Orthodox parishes and complains that Roman Catholic missionaries are encroaching into traditionally Orthodox countries. However, Foreign Minister Anatoliy Zlenko said Tuesday the visit may "positively influence inter-confessional relations in Ukraine," Interfax said.   About 1 million people are expected to attend papal masses in Kyiv and about 2 million in the western city of Lviv, where the pope will beatify 28 Greek Catholics, most of whom died at the hands of Communists and German Nazis. About six people will be allowed to give presents to the pope, including a statuette made of coal from miners, while other presents will be accepted at churches for Vatican museums, Shyrokoradiuk said. The pope plans to meet with leaders of all of Ukraine's confessions, including non-Christians.  Get the printable page
