Ukrainian Ministry Presents New Books On Papal Visit

Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 28 September 2001 presented two new publications dedicated to His Holiness John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine this past June. Anatolii Zlenko, head of the ministry, called the appearance of the books “an event in the cultural and spiritual life of Ukraine.”  Read more »»

Kazakhs Will Hear Pope in Russian; Also a Stop in Armenia

VATICAN CITY, AUG. 28, 2001 (Zenit.org).- On the heels of his historic trip to Ukraine, John Paul II is anticipating his next pilgrimage, to Kazakhstan and Armenia. This Sept. 22-27 trip will have even greater repercussions in Russia, since the Pope will speak in Russian when he visitsKazakhstan, a former Soviet republic. On this trip, the Orthodox Church will likely be more receptive to the Holy Father than was Alexy II, patriarch of Moscow, who opposed the Ukraine trip in June.  Read more »»

Pope Greets Ukrainians On 10th Anniversary of Independence

In a greeting addressed to the president and people of Ukraine, His Holiness Pope John Paul II writes: “I am happy to be addressing your highly esteemed person, to pass on to you and all your fellow citizens the warmest wishes. Over 50% of Ukrainians View Papal Visit Positively

Kyiv, 2 August 2001: In a July survey, 51% of Ukraine's population considered the visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to Ukraine positively. This national sociological survey of 1,200 persons was conducted by SOCIS - a member of the Gallup International Association in Ukraine, for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Pope John Paul II made a five-day visit to Ukraine in June of this year, including visits to the cities of Kyiv and Lviv.  Read more »»

Pope Will Also Find Ukrainians in Kazakhstan

Pope John Paul II is planning to make a pastoral visit to Kazakhstan from 22 to 25 September 2001. As he travels to yet another country of the former Soviet Union he will find a sizable Ukrainian community there. Belarusian Cardinal Hopes for Papal Visit "Sooner or Later Alexy II’s Veto Will Be Discarded"

ROME, JULY 6, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II's successful trip to Ukraine has raised hopes for a papal visit to Belarus, despite the opposition of Moscow's Orthodox patriarch to the Pope's presence in that part of the world, a cardinal says. U.S. Ukrainian Catholics find hope in pope's trip to homeland

QUEENS, N.Y. (CNS) -- U.S. Ukrainian Catholics say they hope Pope John Paul II's long-awaited visit to Ukraine in June will spark more interest in the church among younger generations of Catholics. ``I'm hoping this will spur a younger generation of Ukrainians to become more active in the parish,'' said Myron Kulynych, a native of Ukraine, who is a parish leader at Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Church in the Astoria section of Queens.  Read more »»

Ukrainian Catholic Priest Prevents International Scandal

Saw it with my own eyes on Ukrainian television. On Wednesday, right before the Greek Catholic Liturgy in Lviv, Fr. Gudziak, the Rector of the Lviv Theological Academy, was at the podium addressing the crowd of one million people (talk about a rush!) as John-Paul II was making his way towards the front. Russians Impressed With Pope During His Ukraine Trip

MOSCOW, JULY 3, 2001 (Zenit.org).- Russians seem to be favorable to a papal visit after seeing extensive media coverage of John Paul II's trip to Ukraine.
