Cardinal Husar discusses Christian education with President Kuchma On June 15 Lubomyr Cardinal Husar, Major Archbishop and head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), met with Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in Kyiv, ostensibly to discuss Pope John Paul II's visit to Ukraine at the end of June. Long-term issues related to Christian education, however, were important on Cardinal Husar's list of topics. The students of the Lviv Theological Academy (LTA) will be there for the blessing. But, as the LTA's rector Fr. Dr. Borys Gudziak (pictured at right) noted at a press conference held in Kyiv on June 11, the Ukrainian government does not recognize theology as an academic discipline. It does not recognize his students' degrees or the degrees of any theology students in Ukraine. This information was provided by Stepan Borutskyi, head of the Lviv Regional Administration's Committee on Religious Matters, when asked about the ongoing claims of Moscow Patriarch Alexis II that "there is a Greek-Catholic war ... against Orthodox believers in Ukraine," which Tass reported on June 4.
