Beatification Documents Sealed

On 2 March 2001 the archdiocesan part of the process for the beatification of twenty-seven martyrs of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church was completed during a ceremony held in St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv. Documents attesting to the martyrdom of these bishops, priests and lay members of the Church were sent to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome. It is expected that Pope John Paul II will beatify many of these martyrs during his visit to Ukraine.

The ceremonial rite of sealing the documents prepared by the archdiocesan tribunal was held in the presence of about one hundred monks, nuns, priests, seminarians and lay people. Bishop-Confessor and former member of the underground Church Mykhayil Sabryha led the service. Monsignor Robert Sarno, representative of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, made certain that the procedure was conducted according to all the appropriate canons. Laying his hand on the gospel, Hieromonk Fr. Matey Havryliv (OSBM) took an oath that he would pass the documents on to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

An older woman coming to St. George’s to attend the ceremony looked up at the scaffolding which now surrounds the cupolas of the cathedral and remarked: “Now the work will go more quickly; the holy martyrs will rebuild our Church …”
